Thank you for this important post! The Fundamental Attribution Error (FAE), developed from social psychological research, has empirical support and posits that we tend to overestimate the role of personality or character factors as influences in others' behavior and underestimate the role of environmental or situational factors in others' behavior. For this reason the FAE is one of the foundations of stigma.
