I can personally attest to the validity of this article. One critical piece missing here:

People are 12.7× more likely to die in the first two weeks after release from jail/prison (NEJM, Binswanger et al.).

Most of those deaths are overdoses.

So we’re not just failing to treat SUD—we’re releasing people at the exact moment their biology makes them most vulnerable to death.

That’s not just ineffective policy. It’s predictable harm.
